CarChip - Important Warning and Caution |
 |
| |
IMPORTANT
INFORMATION
Due to CarChip being
primarily developed for USA specification vehicles, there are a
number of technical issues which mean that CarChip does not always
correctly work with vehicles manufactured for sale outside the USA
and Canada.
While vehicles
manufactured for sale outside the USA and Canada may appear to have
an ODBII port, they may not use the same protocols, and thus may not
be compatible with CarChip. For vehicles manufactured for sale in
Europe, some 1996-1999 vehicles may be compatible; most 2000 and
later vehicles should be compatible. Since requirements vary by
country, vehicles manufactured for sale elsewhere in the world may
or may not be compatible.
Please pay particular
attention to the
Vehicle Conflicts and Exclusions and Important Safety Notice
section at the bottom of this page. VeTrack Ltd cannot be held
responsible for any liability, damage, vehicle malfunction or any
other incident arising from the use of CarChip in an incompatible
vehicle, whether or not that vehicle is specifically listed as such. |

Consumer Versions of CarChip
include the CarChip data logger, a CD with software for analyzing
the data, and a USB cable for downloading the data. Available in
three models:
-
CarChip with 75 hours of trip details (when
full, CarChip "rolls over" and begins to overwrite the oldest
data with the newest), including time and date, distance, speed,
idle time, hard accelerations and decelerations, and engine
diagnostic trouble codes.
-
CarChipE/X
with 300 hours of trip details. (The actual number of hours will
vary, depending on how frequently you log data. When full,
CarChipE/X "rolls over" and begins to overwrite the oldest data
with the newest.) All the details of standard CarChip, plus an
accident log and the ability to monitor any 4 out of 23
user-selectable engine parameters. New! Records every
second of every trip!
-
CarChipE/X with Alarm
has all the features of CarChipE/X plus an audible alarm to
warn driver when user-set speed, acceleration, and braking
limits are exceeded.

CarChip All-in-One Driving
and Engine Performance Monitor |
 |
| |
No tools or automotive expertise required! Just plug
CarChip into the OBDII port (easily found under the dashboard or
steering wheel) and you're ready to roll. Once installed, CarChip
reads and stores data from your car's on-board computers,
continuously logging driving and engine performance.
CarChip's Newest Features:
-
Test for emissions status
-
Sort business & personal miles
-
Calculate gas mileage
On-board diagnostics (OBD) data was once
available only to professional mechanics. With CarChip, this same
data is now in your hands. CarChip plugs instantly into the
OBDII connector in your car, where it continuously collects and
stores data from the car's computer control system.
All Models Feature Easy Plug-and-Go Installation.
- Locate your car's OBDII connector. It's found in the
passenger compartment of all cars sold today, model-year 1996 or
later, no more than three feet from the driver's seat.
- Plug the data logger in. A gentle push is all it takes.
- Start driving. That's all there is to it! The data logger
will start collecting data as soon as you start driving.

CarChip
installs in seconds and lets you
- Troubleshoot your engine
Help identify specific problems, trace intermittent ones, and
eliminate guesswork in repairs
- Log your car's performance
View straightforward graphs that show summary and detail reports for
each trip
- Monitor driver performance
Set thresholds for speed, acceleration, and braking, then see
when they are exceeded. Great for training new drivers, managing
fleets, and reviewing teen drivers' performance
- Save money, time, and worry
Clear your own check engine light; walk into a repair shop more
informed and confident
CarChip fits most 1996 and later vehicles sold in the USA as well as
many vehicles sold outside the USA (see below), to automatically
record and store 75 hours of trip details, including:
- Time, date and distance for each
trip
- Speed logged every 5 seconds
- Hard acceleration and
decelerations
- Engine diagnostic trouble codes
and status of other engine parameters when the code occurred
- Idle time
- Time and date CarChip is
connected or disconnected.
In addition to the above features,
the advanced model, CarChipE/X stores 300 hours of trip details and
measures up to four engine parameters every 5 to 60 seconds (and
there are 23 parameters to choose from!).
CarChip fits most 1996 and later vehicles sold in the USA, and
therefore many vehicles sold outside the USA. Outside the USA you
must check on which cars CarChip will work. Even when there is an
OBD adapter in the vehicle, it does not always mean that the CarChip
will record data because of non-standardized protocols. The
practical rule is that the CarChip will work with vehicles that use
one of the following four protocols:
- J1850 VPW
- J1850 PWM
- ISO 9141
- KWP2000 (ISO 14320)
The CAN protocol (ISO 11898) is not
supported by the CarChip.

Vehicle Conflicts and
Exclusions & Important Safety Notice |
 |
| |
IMPORTANT
INFORMATION
Vehicle
Conflicts and Exclusions
There are a
few vehicles in which CarChip does not function properly, and there
are others in which CarChip may interfere with the normal operation
of the vehicle.
Before installing
CarChip, be sure to review the list of
CarChip Vehicle Conflicts and Exclusions.
Some newer model
year vehicles are supported by USB version models of CarChip, but
not by the serial port versions. To see if your vehicle is supported
by serial port models, review the list of
OBD
CAN Equipped Vehicles.
These lists are
current to the best of our knowledge as of the time of publication.
However, given the thousands of vehicle models produced since 1996,
no list can be completely comprehensive. For more information on
OBDII issues and anomalies in general, we recommend
The Equipment and
Tool Institute’s website.
Important
Safety Notice
CarChip has
been carefully designed and tested to comply with the OBDII
protocols used on most cars and light trucks sold in the USA,
model-year 1996 or later. However, some vehicle models are not in
full compliance with these protocols. In addition, the computer
control systems on any given vehicle may be malfunctioning or out of
spec, as may be the sensors used by these systems.
Before
installing CarChip, be sure to review the list of known vehicle
exclusions and anomalies (see the link above). For more information
on OBDII issues and anomalies in general, we recommend The Equipment
and Tool Institute's website at
www.etools.org.
While our
testing and the experience of thousands of CarChip users have shown
the unit to be safe and reliable, there is an inherent risk in
adding any aftermarket product that may potentially affect the
operation or drivability of your vehicle. Should you be concerned
about the operation of your vehicle at any time while using CarChip,
you should pull over, off the roadway, immediately or as soon as it
is safe to do so. Remove CarChip from the OBDII port and consult a
licensed mechanic or automobile service centre.
